Freienfeld Between Pilgrimage Sites, Castles and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Freienfeld
Freienfeld combines pilgrimage, castles, paths through forests and meadows, and mountain destinations. If you would like to combine culture and outdoor activity in one stay, you will find a variety of options here: from Maria Trens and Reifenstein Castle to walking paths and tours at higher elevations.
Maria Trens: Pilgrimage and Art
The Chapel of Grace near Maria Trens was built in 1726/27. The miraculous image at Maria Trens is carved from Swiss stone pine and depicts Mary with the Child. According to a scholar from southern Germany, it was created around 1470 – the date therefore remains explicitly an approximate chronological classification.
The pilgrimage church of Maria Trens features Rococo furnishings, including, in particular, a ceiling painting by Joseph Adam Mölk. The pilgrimage route from Sprechenstein to Maria Trens was created in 2001 and comprises 14 stations marking the route between the starting point and the pilgrimage destination.
Reifenstein Castle and Castel Tasso
Reifenstein Castle, also known as Castel Tasso, is located in the municipality of Freienfeld and is one of the best-preserved and most artistically and historically valuable castles in South Tyrol. At the castle, visitors can see the original castle kitchen, the bathhouse, medieval sleeping alcoves in the residential tower, paneled rooms and the famous Green Hall.
Reifenstein Castle can be reached by bus route 310.
Walking Paths and Mountain Landscapes
The Bee Trail in Trens begins at the Kulturhaus in the village center and leads for more than two kilometers through forests and meadows southward toward Valgenäun; its fixed length provides a clear framework for planning the day locally. Information boards and interactive stations provide information about the life of bees and the production of honey and other bee products. The trail is suitable for strollers.
The circular Trens–Valgenäun hike is also suitable for strollers. It leads from the pilgrimage site of Maria Trens along a walking path to the hamlet of Valgenäun, with its historically and culturally interesting Church of St. Valentine. The hike from Pfulters to Lake Puntleider follows trails no. 16 and 14; the lake lies at an altitude of 1,850 meters.
Cima di Stilves (Zinseler) is located within the municipality of Campo di Trens. It is a panoramic mountain for the whole family and is suitable for tours at sunrise and sunset. The choice of time of day is therefore part of planning these tours. Rofis Boden in Stilfes offers a small natural pond, extensive green meadows, a barbecue area, a pavilion and a playground made of natural materials. Those who plan paths and landscape destinations in Freienfeld in addition to cultural attractions will find information about bee life, honey and other bee products along the Bee Trail; Rofis Boden complements an outdoor stay with a natural pond, meadows, a pavilion, a barbecue area and a playground made of natural materials, providing a stay with changing impressions in Freienfeld.
Rofis Boden can be reached in about 20 minutes on foot. Because of the limited number of parking spaces, travel by public transport is recommended.
