Besenello lies in a sunny amphitheatre between vineyards and orchards. For planning your trip, this landscape provides a good framework: you can combine medieval history, nature observation, regional cuisine, and walking and cycling experiences. It is precisely the combination of fortified history, protected landscapes and winegrowing that gives the town its distinctive profile.

Medieval Traces and Castel Beseno

The parish church of Sant’Agata in Besenello has medieval origins dating back to around 1205.

Castel Beseno is the largest fortified complex in Trentino. In 1487, Castel Beseno was at the centre of the historic Battle of Calliano. Today, visitors can walk along the defensive wall and handle helmets, shields and armour. The year 1487 is one of the key historical dates associated with Castel Beseno.

Trentino Flavours in the Landscape

The Magnalonga is a traditional culinary hike. Along the way, typical Trentino products are sampled and the impressive landscapes of Alta Vallagarina are visited. This creates a travel experience in which regional specialities are not separated from the landscape, but discovered together with it. The combination of hiking and tasting gives the Magnalonga its distinctive itinerary.

Scanuppia: Forests, Pastures and High Plateaus

The Scanuppia Nature Reserve lies above Besenello. It combines forests, pastures and high plateaus, bringing different landscape types together within a compact thematic area. Scanuppia is known for capercaillies, as well as numerous red deer and roe deer; golden eagles can also be spotted there. Nature observation focuses on these animal species and on the transition between forest, pasture and high plateau. Those wishing to include nature observation in their stay will find a clear focus here away from the historic buildings.

Circular Routes and Paths into the Hills

The paved road from Besenello to Malga Palazzo is approximately 7.5 km long. The Giro di Besenello is a 7.5 km circular route around Castel Beseno to the gorge of the Rio Cavallo.

Besenello also offers specific opportunities for cycling. The Lungo la Via del Moscato Giallo cycling route leaves the Adige Cycle Path at Besenello, passes through the old village to Castel Beseno above it, and then descends through landscapes known for Moscato Giallo grapes. From Besenello, the cycle path on the floor of the Adige Valley is easily accessible by bicycle. For cyclists, the route can be divided into passing through the village, riding to the castle above it, and the subsequent descent.

Tailor Your Stay

When choosing accommodation in Besenello, you can align the focus of your stay with the specific experiences you are seeking: the parish church and fortified complex, the Scanuppia Nature Reserve, or walking and cycling routes. This allows Besenello to be viewed as a peaceful base for planning different interests, without separating culture, nature, cuisine and activity from one another.
