Bolbeno: Mountain Landscape, Village History and Winter Experiences
Accommodation in Bolbeno
Bolbeno lies on a green plateau at the foot of Monte Piza and offers an almost complete panoramic view of the Busa di Tione. At the Dos Borel viewpoint stands a beech tree several centuries old, at least 500 years old. Bolbeno thus combines mountain scenery, panoramic views and traces of history.
Plateau, Panoramic Views and Village History
In Bolbeno’s historic center, Carère, the village center forms a quadrilateral with symmetrical streets, gardens, passageways and lanes. They lead to squares with granite fountains typical of the Giudicarie area. Historic houses preserve wooden arcades, portals and windows with granite surrounds, along with archways between old walls. Faded sacred murals and signs from former inns are also part of this traditional village scene.
The Church of San Zeno has medieval origins and was first documented in 1529. From 1857 onward, it was completely rebuilt in the Neoclassical style and solemnly consecrated in 1862. Inside, it is divided into three naves, shallow side chapels and a slightly elevated presbytery area.
Routes from Canzane to Val Larga
The area offers several clearly distinct stages for walks and mountain trails. The walk from the center of Bolbeno to the Santuario Madonna del Lares takes about 30 minutes; it leads uphill through the forest and, after approximately 2 kilometers, reaches the wayside shrine at Canzane. From the wayside cross near Canzane, a 3-kilometer forest road leads in about 50 minutes to Malga Splaz, also known as Malga Bassa, at an altitude of 1,200 meters. From the end of this forest road behind Malga Splaz, an easy path leads through Val Larga in about an hour to the higher-altitude Malga Meda. Malga Meda is equipped as a bivouac with a fireplace, wood-burning stove and two rooms.
A mountain-bike route also passes through Bolbeno: The Tione–Le Sole–M.ga Cengledino–M.ga Lodranega–Val di Breguzzo–Bondo–Madonna del Làres–Bolbeno–Tione route passes through the village after the Santuario Madonna del Làres.
Winter Sports for Different Experience Levels
At the Bolbeno ski area, you can rent downhill skis and ski boots, snowshoes, sledges and tubes; night skiing is also available. The Centro Sci in Borgo Lares offers an easy blue run and an intermediate red run. They can be reached via the four-seater Pianezze chairlift and the Coste ski lift. Bolbenolandia is a winter play park with two conveyor belts that help children gain their first experience on skis. One conveyor belt is intended for beginners; there are also activities with bobs and sledges.
Snowshoes and Regional Cuisine
A recurring winter experience is CiaspoLares, a nighttime snowshoe hike through the forests above Bolbeno that passes the Santuario Madonna del Lares. The seasonal character of the village is also reflected in Not(t)e di Note: The event has been held in Bolbeno for more than twenty years on the Saturday before Ferragosto, that is, in mid-August. During the event, Capùs are prepared in large quantities by dozens of women according to an old recipe. Capùs de Bolbeno are a Trentino specialty consisting of small balls wrapped in strawberry-grape leaves.
