Calliano: History, Vineyards and Rio Cavallo
Accommodation in Calliano
Calliano between the River and Vineyards
Calliano combines medieval origins with a landscape of vineyards and mountains. Calliano lies on the Rio Cavallo, a mountain stream that flows down from Folgaria and joins the Adige. Historical references therefore meet an environment shaped by water, slopes and viticulture.
Castles and Historic Centre
Castel Pietra is located in Calliano at the foot of Castel Beseno. In Calliano's historic centre, there are stately palaces with façades decorated with frescoes. The castles and palaces represent different historical focal points: Castel Pietra is defined by its location at the foot of Castel Beseno, while in the town centre the design of the façades attracts attention. The historical references thus extend from the surroundings of the castles into the buildings of the town centre.
Churches and Remembrance
Calliano is home to the Church of San Lorenzo and the Chiesetta dei Santi Sebastiano e Fabiano. San Lorenzo dates from 1724, is neoclassical and commemorates the Trentino-Tyrolean victory of 1487. The Chiesetta dei Santi Sebastiano e Fabiano is also one of Calliano's churches.
Rio Cavallo and the Waterfall at Zambel
The characteristic waterfall of the Rio is located at Zambel in Calliano, where its water flows fresh and clear. For planning a day, Zambel can be treated as a nature-focused attraction separate from the cultural and historical sites. Those focusing on the river and landscape can therefore classify it differently from a visit to the churches or palaces.
Easy Trekking Route for Families
The Sentiero dell'Arte is an easy trekking route on unpaved paths. It is also suitable for families, but not for pushchairs. The unpaved surface distinguishes the route from a completely paved path. When incorporating it into the day's plans, pushchairs should therefore be ruled out and the path surface considered as a separate criterion. The condition of the path is therefore decisive when choosing this particular activity.
Historical Re-enactment and Summer Festival
The Battle of Calliano is commemorated every year with a historical re-enactment. In summer, the Sagra dell’Addolorata also takes place in Calliano. The re-enactment is linked to a specific event in the town's history, while the Sagra adds a seasonal festival to the events calendar. Those exploring Calliano culturally will therefore encounter both historical remembrance and local festivities. Both events have their own timing and thematic focus.
Magnalonga and Culinary Character
Calliano takes part in the Magnalonga. The culinary walk is organised together with Volano and Besenello and is the first enogastronomic walk in Trentino. When exploring regional cuisine, the Magnalonga is therefore one of the distinct topics associated with Calliano.
