Carzano between the Hillside and Timber History

Carzano lies on the northern edge of the Scurelle floodplain, on a terraced slope.

Church and Remembrance

The Church of Madonna della Neve in Carzano is a Baroque building dating from the late 17th century. Its octagonal floor plan and the stucco ornaments attributed to Carlo Romeri define its architectural uniqueness. At the same time, the parish church is a memorial site for the Bersaglieri of the 72nd Battalion, other Italian soldiers and the Austro-Hungarian soldiers who fell in connection with the “Sogno di Carzano”.

Next to the parish church, a bilingual memorial plaque by the Croce Nera commemorates the Austro-Hungarian fallen. On your tour of Carzano, this creates a clear link between sacred architecture and the events associated with the “Sogno di Carzano”.

Trails through the Timber Tradition

The Sentiero Etnografico del Legno di Carzano is suitable for all age groups, covers two kilometres and has an elevation gain of 300 metres. The trail leads from Pontarso to the hamlet of Marolo and conveys Carzano’s ancient timber tradition. This includes logging, the extraction of timber from the forest and transporting the wood by rafting along the Maso mountain stream.

Approximately halfway along the Sentiero Etnografico del Legno di Carzano, there is a viewpoint at a World War I outpost. From there, it is possible to observe the basin of the Maso di Calamento mountain stream. Its approximate location along the route offers an additional landscape and historical perspective without reducing the trail to a single theme.

The Percorso di Carzano lies within Carzano’s built-up area and leads to the places that were the setting for the “Sogno di Carzano”. Guided tours for this route are available on request.

Museum and Traditional Work

The Ethnographic Timber Museum is housed in the old building of the Malga Prà dell'Ovo (Pra del Lovo). Objects, photographs and explanatory panels convey the history of historic timber transport. Together with the Sentiero Etnografico del Legno di Carzano, the museum makes visible how deeply the timber tradition is rooted in local themes.

Riverside Setting, Climate and Blossoms

The Parco fluviale Carzano is suitable for families and young people to go for walks, have picnics and spend time outdoors. Alongside the cultural and historical trails, it therefore offers a place for a more relaxed day. Thanks to its location, Carzano has a mild climate that is particularly suitable for fruit cultivation. The characteristic rose of Carzano blooms in May and June, adding a seasonal accent to the local landscape.

Carzano in the Middle Valsugana

The historic jurisdiction of Castellalto included the territories of the municipalities of Carzano, Telve, Telve di Sopra and Torcegno. These lie on the southern slope of the Lagorai range between the courses of the Ceggio and Maso streams in the middle Valsugana. For understanding Carzano’s regional context, this historical and geographical connection is just as important as the local churches, trails and evidence of timber work.
