Daiano: Local History, Nature Trails and Speck Tradition
Accommodation in Daiano
Daiano offers a combination of local history, trails through the landscape and a tradition of speck. Anyone considering a hotel or other accommodation for an individual trip can plan around these different interests. Daiano lies on the road from Cavalese to Passo Lavazé and can be reached from Cavalese by public transport. From Daiano, nature trails lead out with views of the Lagorai range.
Walking Trails Above Daiano
The walking trail “L’incanto dei prati e dei boschi di località Ganzaie” leads above Daiano through the higher areas of the village. It then continues through a beautiful larch forest to extensive green spaces. The Ganzaie walking trail includes a picnic area with a fountain, table and large lawn. This gives the trail specific places to stop for anyone who wants to combine time outdoors with a break in the landscape.
San Tommaso and the Historic Village Setting
A central point of reference in the local history is the parish church of San Tomaso in Daiano, which was consecrated on 28 November 1193. The Church of San Tommaso combines Gothic and Baroque styles. The church interior contains frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries, including a reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. The north façade also features a large 16th-century fresco of Saint Christopher. The onion-domed bell tower of the Gothic church was built in 1761.
Daiano’s historical diversity can also be seen away from the church. Sacred frescoes adorn the oldest houses, while monolithic fountains decorate the streets. Casa Romana, also known as “Castello”, is an imposing Gothic-style building. Ex Colonia Pavese adds a 1930s Rationalist-style building to this village setting. It was established as a sanatorium for respiratory diseases and was later used during the Second World War as a factory for military optical instruments.
Speck and Traditional Cuisine
The local character is also reflected in Maso dello Speck, an agriturismo offering traditional cuisine. The speck at Maso dello Speck is slowly aged for 10 to 12 months. Daiano is a destination for gastronomic tourism because of its speck production. Travellers who want to discover regional food products and how they are made will find a distinct focus here alongside architecture, sacred art and walking trails.
Activities and Trip Planning
For a range of mountain interests, the Personal Mountain Guide organises trekking, hut tours, via ferrata routes, climbing courses, canyoning, snowshoe hikes, ski mountaineering, ice climbing and traditional mountaineering on glaciers and in the high mountains. Daiano has the most hours of sunshine in Val di Fiemme. Together with the nature trails, views of the Lagorai range and cultural attractions, this makes it a place where you can choose whether to focus your trip on outdoor activities, local history or regional cuisine.
