Fondo: Rio Sass, Lago Smeraldo and Frescoes
Accommodation in Fondo
Fondo combines a distinctive natural landscape with a historic town center. The Rio Sass Canyon cuts through the town.
Canyon and Lakeside Trails
The Passeggiata al burrone connects Fondo’s historic center with Lago Smeraldo and runs along the Rio Sass stream. The easy family trail passes vertical rock walls, waterfalls, suspension bridges and old mills. There is also a circular trail around Lago Smeraldo that is suitable for strollers.
Cycling through Forests and Villages
The marked Alta Val di Non cycle path is an approximately 40-kilometer circular route that includes Fondo and runs mostly flat along its western side. A guided e-bike tour starts in Fondo and follows the cycle path through forests, meadows and villages.
Winter Connections to the Ciaspolada
The snowshoe race was moved in the early 1990s from Tret to the Pradiei meadows between Fondo and Romeno. In the wider regional area, a winter route across the Pradiei meadows partly follows the race course. Two editions of the Ciaspolada took place exclusively in the town of Fondo.
Facades, Frescoes and Water Clock
In Fondo’s historic center, painted facades dating from the 14th to the 16th century form part of the townscape. The Church of Santa Lucia contains a rich cycle of frescoes dating from 1380 to 1399. You can also view several frescoes dedicated to Saint James of Compostela in Fondo. Fondo’s astronomical water clock for measuring time consists of two interconnected mechanisms powered by water.
Water as a Cultural and Craft Theme
The relationship between water and craftsmanship is brought to life at the Museo La Casa dell'Acqua. The museum includes interactive exhibition stations: a scale model, a 4K film, stop-motion videos and a panel explaining how a hydroelectric power plant works. A guided tour of the Museo La Casa dell'Acqua also includes a visit to the Mulino Bertagnolli. At the Mulino Bertagnolli, water from the water conduit continues to drive the wheel that once powered the millstones.
Regional Products at Malga di Fondo
The local food culture includes Malga di Fondo, with mountain cheese, butter, yogurt and ricotta. During its operating months, it offers lunch and dinner by prior reservation. Visitors planning to enjoy regional cuisine should therefore take both the operating months and advance reservation into account.
Visiting the Rio Sass Canyon
A specific rule applies when visiting the Rio Sass Canyon: tours take place daily, including public holidays, and must be reserved in advance. If you plan to visit the canyon, this reservation is therefore part of the schedule before the visit.
