Discover Lavis: Hanging Garden, Bridge History and Wine
Accommodation in Lavis
Lavis between a Hanging Garden, History and Mountain Trails
The Giardino dei Ciucioi, also known as Giardino Bortolotti, is a unique hanging garden in Lavis where ruins and vegetation are combined. This makes the site interesting for culture-oriented travelers who want to appreciate not only individual architectural forms, but also the relationship between remnants of walls and the plant world. The site combines visible traces of history with an unusual garden complex.
Historical Traces and Architecture
The first iron version of the Pont de Fer dates back to 1878. This then-new modern version of the Pont de Fer was swept away in the devastating flood of 1882. The bridge’s history can therefore be traced through two distinct historical moments.
Today’s Chiesa S. Uldarico stands on the site of an earlier wayside shrine built around 1200 by immigrant Bavarian craftsmen. It was dedicated to the German bishop S. Udalrico. For visitors interested in cultural history, this site connects the present-day church with an early religious reference.
The Palazzo de Maffei also leads through its architecture into a historical context: The broad portal opens onto the courtyard and, via a structured portico, leads to the historic Ronch building complex. There, picturesque views of houses with a distinctly rural character can be seen. The portal, courtyard, portico and building complex form a clearly comprehensible architectural sequence.
The Lavis–Monte Corona Trail
The Lavis–Monte Corona trail is maintained by the SAT and marked with trail sign E464. It begins in the center of Lavis. From there, it leads through vegetable gardens, vineyards and forests to the summit of Monte Corona. The changing landscapes range from the town center through cultivated areas and vineyards to the forest at the summit. Trail sign E464 provides a clear marker for the route.
Museums and Mountains in the Surrounding Area
The surrounding area of Lavis is home to the Museo Storico delle Truppe Alpine, the Monte Palace, the Museo Storico in Trento - Castello del Buonconsiglio and the Provincial Museum of Art. Lavis’s cultural surroundings therefore extend across several institutions and encompass different museum and palace references without assigning them to the town center.
The summit of Dosso della Rocca, the mountain Dosso Alto, the mountain La Gorsa and the summit of Canfedin are also located in the surrounding area of Lavis. These four summits and mountains lie near Lavis and broaden the town’s connection to the surrounding mountain landscape.
