Massimeno is located in Adamello Brenta Nature Park, at the foot of Monte Tov and on a side terrace of the Sarca river valley. The village therefore combines a distinctive mountain landscape with traditional townscapes and trails that appeal to different interests. If you would like to combine nature, peaceful walks, more challenging hikes and regional culture, Massimeno offers several specific starting points for doing so.

Location between the Sarca and the high mountains

The municipality of Massimeno extends from the valley slopes towards the Sarca River as far as 3,354-metre-high Monte LĂ res. Another prominent reference point is the barns of Plan, located at an altitude of 1,588 metres. These different elevations show how the area rises from the valley slopes into the mountain landscape, without the village losing its connection to the cultural landscape.

In the village, the large square opens up views of the valley and the Adamello-Presanella massif. The ridge of Malga Movlina is also characterised by extensive pastures and offers clear views of the Adamello and VallĂłn massifs. Several peaks are also located in the vicinity of Massimeno: Monte Toff, Monte Cargadursi, L'Androna and La Cingla. Together with Monte Tov and Monte LĂ res, they shape the geographical orientation around the village.

Hiking trails for different levels of ability

Massimeno offers hikes on trails of varying difficulty, from peaceful walks to more challenging hikes. This allows you to adapt your choice of trail to your preferred pace for the day and to different personal requirements. An old mule track leads from Massimeno to the barns of Plan and connects the village with the higher cultural landscape of this area.

Churches, townscapes and local traditions

On a walk through Massimeno, you will pass old houses made of stone and wood. The local cultural heritage includes the Church of San Giovanni Battista, which is also part of the “Baschenis” circuit. Massimeno also has a centuries-old tradition of knife grinding; those who practise it are known as “arrotini”. Alongside its landscape, these elements give the village a clearly recognisable cultural character.

Several churches add their own distinctive features. The façade of the Church of San Luigi Gonzaga is decorated with a fresco depicting the praying saint. The church stands on a small grassy terrace in a forest, directly above the road connecting Massimeno with Bocenago. The Church of Our Lady of Loreto is located on the edge of Massimeno’s terrace, dates from 1758 and was rebuilt in 1862.

Cultural destinations in the wider region

In the wider region around Massimeno is Borgo di Canale, a castle. The Area archeologica del Monte San Martino, an ancient site, is also located there. Castel d'Arco is another castle in the area. The range of attractions is complemented by the Museo Storico delle Truppe Alpine, a museum. The cultural perspective around Massimeno therefore encompasses churches and historic townscapes as well as castles, an ancient site and a museum.
