Mezzolombardo between Teroldego, history and mountain trails
Accommodation in Mezzolombardo
Mezzolombardo combines a winemaking tradition dating back thousands of years with historic alleyways, buildings and paths above the town. If you are planning a trip to Italy, you will find a range of points of interest here: regional wines and tastings, architecture spanning several centuries, as well as a suspension bridge and a via ferrata for experienced hikers.
Teroldego, vineyards and distillery culture
Wine has been produced in Mezzolombardo for thousands of years. Teroldego Rotaliano is regarded as a full-bodied and aromatic red wine from Mezzolombardo. Cantina Rotaliana bears the name “Casa del Teroldego”; its 300 members are committed to preserving this grape variety. At Cantina Rotaliana, you can book guided tours of the wine cellar and vineyard.
Agricola Foradori also offers a bookable wine experience. The “Diario di viaggio” begins in the estate’s vineyards and vegetable gardens. It then leads into two cellar rooms: one contains wooden barrels and wooden vats, while the other contains terracotta tinajas. The experience concludes with a tasting of biodynamically produced wines accompanied by raw-milk cheese.
At Villa de Varda, distillery, museum and tasting come together. The bookable “inQuota Whisky Discover” experience includes a guided tour of the distillery, a visit to the Cose di Casa museum and a tasting of four inQuota whiskies. The “inQuota 360° Whisky Edition” adds the mash fermentation room, a whisky workshop and four inQuota whiskies served with local products.
The Cose di Casa museum in Villa de Varda is divided into three sections and displays around 1,600 objects related to agriculture, winemaking and distillation in Trentino.
Historic centre and architectural heritage
In Mezzolombardo’s historic centre, the Church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist was built between 1846 and 1849. The bell tower of the former church dates from 1752 to 1765 and now stands free-standing in the square. In the ancient Piaz district, alleyways, palaces and stately villas tell the story of Mezzolombardo’s history as a trading community.
Castello della Torre is a Renaissance residence surrounded by terraced gardens. Its oldest core is a massive 13th-century tower that was incorporated into the central residential building. The complex also includes the 16th-century Chapel of S. Apollonia in the panoramic gardens. Castello della Torre is not open to visitors, but it can be viewed from Mezzolombardo’s historic alleyways.
Other historical points of interest include the Church of San Pietro, which was built in the 12th century and later rebuilt in 1534, as well as the Palazzo del PodestĂ . This stately residence dates from the 18th century and features elaborate decoration.
Bridge, via ferrata and landscape
The 130-metre-long Ponte sospeso Mezzolombardo suspension bridge connects Toresela with Colle San Pietro and can be reached on foot from Mezzolombardo’s historic centre in ten minutes. The Ferrata Val del Ri begins in the upper part of Mezzolombardo at the tower summit known as Toresela and is suitable for experienced hikers.
Above Mezzolombardo, Monte Fausior contains deep gorges carved by the Rio Fai. SAT trail O603B is associated with the names Pra Grant and Croce di Mezzolombardo, as well as the value 690.
