Passo Del Tonale combines winter sports with trails, high-Alpine landscapes and places of remembrance. The Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area has 100 kilometres of pistes; snowkiting is also possible there. This allows you to structure your days in different ways: on the pistes, with a special winter sport or with other destinations that show the character of Tonale beyond winter sports. For an individual trip to Italy, this combination is particularly interesting if you do not want to focus on the same thing every day.

Activities for families and winter sports enthusiasts

The Parco delle Marmotte at Passo Tonale is an activity trail for children with seven stations. From Passo Tonale, you can reach it on foot via a walk of around one and a half hours along a gravel road. For families, the route to the stations is therefore a distinct part of the day, not merely a short transition. The Pontedilegno-Tonale ski area adds a more sporty setting to this outing, where snowkiting is also possible alongside skiing.

Trails with varying levels of difficulty

The Sentiero della Pace begins at Passo del Tonale. Its first two stages require extensive experience and specialised equipment. If you include this trail in your travel plans, you should take the requirements for experience and equipment into account from the outset. The name of the trail here does not refer to an arbitrarily easy walk, but to stages with clear prerequisites.

The hike on the Presena Glacier has a different profile. It leads downhill from Capanna Presena to Lago del Monticello and is easy and rich in panoramic views. The trail passes through high-Alpine landscapes that were recently exposed by the retreat of the glaciers. As a result, this route places particular emphasis on the landscape and its visible changes, while the first two stages of the Sentiero della Pace are defined by their considerable requirements in terms of experience and equipment.

Historical sites at Tonale

The Sacrario della Prima Guerra Mondiale at Tonale was built in 1936 by the architect Pietro Del Fabbro. The Galleria Paradiso can be reached from Passo Tonale by the Paradiso cable car. At Forte Zaccarana, the interior can only be viewed in part and exclusively as part of guided tours. These sites provide different ways of accessing the history of Tonale: a sacrarium built in 1936, a Galleria accessible by cable car and a fortress whose interior is only partially accessible and only during guided tours.

You can use these clear focal points as a guide when choosing your accommodation. Whether you want to combine your stay primarily with winter sports, a children’s trail, an easy glacier hike, challenging stages or historical visits will influence the right daily rhythm. This makes it possible to plan a hotel or other accommodation in Passo Del Tonale around the trip you actually want to take.
