Portolo between Church, Gorges and Peaks

Portolo combines local history with a distinctive surrounding landscape. The Chiesa di S. Tommaso was built in the village in 1820. The patron saint of Portolo is San Tommaso; his feast day is December 21. In Portolo, San Tommaso is encountered in two specific contexts: in the name of the church and in the religious affiliation of the place. December 21 adds a fixed religious reference to the building's history, connected with San Tommaso in Portolo.

Gorge, Mountains and the Ponte di Portolo

The Forra di S. Giustina is a deep limestone gorge in Val di Non through which the Noce torrent flows. High rock walls border it; it also features seepage outlets and cliff vegetation. The combination of a water-bearing gorge, high rock walls, seepage outlets and cliff vegetation specifically characterizes the landscape. The Noce appears in both locations: in the Forra, it flows as a torrent, while at the Ponte di Portolo it forms part of the Torrente Noce HZT1 fishing section. In the surroundings of Portolo are Cima d'Arza, a peak, Monte Corno, a mountain, as well as Monte Cuc and Bodrina, both peaks.

The new Ponte di Portolo serves as a river crossing on the circular trail and was inaugurated in 2009. The Ponte di Portolo location can be reached for the Torrente Noce HZT1 fishing section; it can be accessed from Portolo or Segno via a paved farm road. When planned together, the circular trail and the fishing section remain two separate projects: the circular trail focuses on crossing the river, while the fishing section focuses on access to the Torrente Noce HZT1 via the paved farm road. Access to the fishing section is via a paved farm road; the circular trail uses the Ponte di Portolo as a river crossing.

Historical Traces and Castles

Castelàc di Portolo is a narrow, rocky peninsula that is now wooded and bordered on three sides by the deep gorges of the Noce and Tresenga torrents. The peninsula thus combines a narrow, rocky shape with woodland and the three bordering gorges. Many researchers tend to identify Castelàc di Portolo with the Anagnis castrum mentioned by Paolo Diacono.

Castellaccio di Portolo is also associated with a Roman necropolis. The Cantina Sociale di Portolo existed in 1907.
