Culture and history in Soraga

Soraga combines living traditions with historic sacred buildings, old farmstead structures and paths through nature. It offers a destination where cultural discoveries and active days can be combined in a varied way.

A defining example is the Desmonteada. It marks the return of the livestock from the summer mountain pasture at Passo San Pellegrino with a procession in traditional Ladin dress. The programme also includes an organic market and a demonstration of traditional cheese-making. Old working methods, regional products and festive tradition are at the heart of this shared event.

The churches also tell of the long history of the village and its surroundings. The Chiesa parrocchiale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo has been documented since 1512. After being damaged by a lightning strike, it was rebuilt in 1769 and extended in 1962. In Barbida, the Chiesa dell’Immacolata was built as a votive church in 1662 and decorated with frescoes in 1928 by the local painter Giuseppe Zulian.

The historic character of Barbida also includes an old farmstead that was mentioned as early as the 15th century. It contains old hay barns built using the log construction method. Anyone interested in regional architectural styles and traditional rural structures will find tangible traces of past ways of life here.

Trails with cultural and landscape connections

The Soraga | Sester | Palua cultural trail starts and ends in Soraga. It is 5.1 kilometres long and takes approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Another historical trace is provided by the boundary stones between the ecclesiastical principalities of Trento and Brixen. They date from 1551, are signposted along a forest path and can be reached on foot. This also makes it possible to combine a stay in Soraga with an interest in historic borders and regional history.

Fuciade is also part of the municipality of Soraga. The area includes grazing land and mountain huts and can be reached from Passo San Pellegrino. Every August, the “A pè ta mont” event takes place there in the Fuciade hollow, dedicated to traditional crafts and the culinary traditions of the Fassa Valley.

Nature, cycling and winter sports

From Soraga, you can use the Pista ciclabile delle Dolomiti. In addition, numerous walking paths lead through nature, as do trekking routes at high elevations. For planning purposes, this means a choice between shorter trails and more demanding activities, without every route requiring the same amount of time or physical effort.

Near Soraga, the Marcialonga cross-country ski trail offers an opportunity for cross-country skiing. The Lago di Pezzè presents a different landscape: The artificial reservoir is located near Soraga and stands out for its turquoise-coloured water.

Local crafts also add to the impression of Soraga. Several craft workshops specialise in furniture and wooden objects with Alpine motifs.

Other places for planning your trip

If you would like to combine Soraga with other places, you can also explore Nanno, Deggiano, Cavizzana, Ischia Di Pergine, Tione Di Trento, Piazzola, Cadine and Albiano.
