Stenico between Castle, Nature and Ancient Paths

Stenico combines historic townscapes with experiences in nature and paths through the landscape. The first documented mention of a “castrum” on the hill of Stenico dates back to 1163; this probably referred to a group of fortifications protecting the surrounding villages. Since 1973, Castel Stenico has belonged to the Castello del Buonconsiglio museum. The historic village features traditional residential buildings, elegant palazzi and numerous fountains in its squares.

History Dating Back to the Bronze Age

The Calferi necropolis, through which Stenico traces its origins, dates back to the Bronze Age and contains numerous fragments of ancient pottery. The Val Algone also combines landscapes with traces of earlier use: the discovery trail passes the remains of a disused quarry. Near Rifugio Ghedina, the ruins of a glass factory bear witness to the glass industry that flourished in the valley between 1800 and 1880.

Water, Plants and Geological Formations

The Cascata del Rio Bianco is an unusual karst waterfall that suddenly emerges from the rock and belongs to a spring system fed by snowmelt from the Brenta Dolomites. The waterfall can be reached via a short uphill walk within the Area Natura Rio Bianco in Adamello Brenta Nature Park. Casa del Parco Flora presents the park’s vegetation indoors and along an outdoor educational trail that explains plant communities and different parts of plants. It also serves as the visitor centre for the Area Natura Rio Bianco. The Arca di Fraporte in Val Laone is a natural arch formed by karst and mountain-stream processes; it is recognised as a geosite by Adamello Brenta Nature Park and lies within the municipality of Stenico. Val d’Algone lies partly within Stenico in Adamello Brenta Nature Park, between the Ponte Pià gorge and Passo del Gotro.

Hiking Trails with Culture Along the Way

The Percorso Valle dei Mulini – Stenico begins in Stenico and leads from the piazza along an old mule track to the Sarca River at the entrance to the Forra della Scaletta. Along the way, you can see the ruins of old mills and workshops, as well as facilities that are still operating to generate electricity. The Stenico Tour circular route passes through meadows, forests and agricultural land before returning to its starting point in Stenico. BoscoArteStenico is an art walk through nature, with traditional wooden sculptures and avant-garde installations along the route. BoscoArteStenico also includes the children’s trail Sentiero dei piccoli Camminatori, with downloadable multimedia material.
