Taio lies amid orchards on a broad terrace opposite a deep gorge of the Noce River. Below Taio, cracks in the rock form cool pools, which are among the area’s distinctive landscape features. This combination makes Taio interesting for you if you perceive the landscape not merely as a backdrop, but as part of the character of the place. Those who do not choose the destination based on a single attraction will find several thematic approaches: nature, architectural history, museums and a traditional local craft tradition.

Gorge and trails around Taio

The Sentiero dell’Eremo di Santa Giustina runs between the districts of Taio and Dermulo in the municipality of Predaia. It passes through the deep gorge of Santa Giustina, which is recognized as a Site of Community Importance (SCI). This makes a distinctive gorge landscape one of Taio’s specific connections to trails and nature.

The 7th stage of the Cammino Jacopeo d’Anaunia is a hike of medium length with little elevation gain and landscapes in the lower Val di Non. For your planning, this means a trail profile characterized by its moderate length and low relief is at the center.

Churches, Frescoes and Early Local History

The Chiesa della Madonna del Rosario in Taio has a Romanesque portal dating from the 13th century. Fragments of 14th-century frescoes have been preserved on its west façade: the Madonna and Child, Saint Martin with the beggar and the head of a saint.

Archaeological finds of graves, objects and coins indicate that Taio was once a Roman settlement. The parish church of S. Vittore in Taio has a bell tower dating from the 16th century, while the Church of Beata Vergine Maria in Taio dates from the 12th century. Together, these buildings and finds show that the history of the place encompasses various historical periods.

Museums and Crafts in Taio

The Museo delle antiche attrezzature in Taio’s fire station presents the history and identity of Predaia’s volunteer fire brigade through historical firefighting equipment. The connection to the fire brigade is therefore directly linked to the place and its local history.

The Museo delle fruste in Taio is a reconstruction of a workshop for making whip handles. Using tools as well as video, postcard and photographic materials, it illustrates the history of whip-handle production and, more generally, life in earlier times. The production of whip handles is a traditional craft specific to Taio, which began in 1830. Taio also features a typical 16th- and 17th-century architectural style, with numerous rural and representative farmhouses, large loggias and wooden bridges.

Apple Cultivation in the Taio Area

The Mondo Melinda visitor center is located in the Segno district within the Taio area. Guided tours and workshops with fruit tastings on apple cultivation are offered there.
