Vezzano: Geological Trail, History and Art
Accommodation in Vezzano
Vezzano is an interesting destination if you would like to include geological formations, local history and contemporary art in your trip to Italy. In addition to trails that start in the town, Vezzano’s historical landmarks, as well as museums, palaces and peaks in the surrounding area, are among the themes you can use to shape your plans. When choosing a hotel or other accommodation, the key consideration is therefore whether you prefer nature experiences, culture or a combination of both.
Geology and trails around Vezzano
The Antonio Stoppani geological trail starts in Vezzano. It is well signposted, maintained by the municipality of Vallelaghi and leads to the first eight glacial potholes. The Vallelaghi Geological Trail also starts in the town of Vezzano, on the northwestern slopes of Monte Bondone. It connects numerous glacial potholes known as “marmitte dei giganti”. This gives you two geological trails offering different ways to explore the landscape’s characteristic formations.
The circular trail Anello sulle tracce dei vecchi mulini starts in Vezzano, continues to Fraveggio and Ciago, and then returns. The route is approximately 7 km long and runs mostly along trails. Listed alongside it as a more physically demanding option is the Valle dei Laghi Trail Tour: it is a difficult 43.8 km mountain-bike route with a stated duration of six hours. The different route lengths and means of transport help you plan the outing according to your own pace and interests.
Historical traces in the town
Vezzano was elevated to the status of a borgo in 1527 by Prince-Bishop Cardinal Bernardo Clesio. The reason was the obedience demonstrated by its inhabitants during the Peasants’ War. A shooting practice facility belonging to the Imperial Regio Casino di Bersaglio has been documented in Vezzano since 1708. After almost a century of neglect, the Imperial Regio Casino di Bersaglio was reconstructed by the Compagnia Schützen “Major Enrico Tonelli” using drawings discovered in 1901 in the Provincial Archives of Innsbruck, and was inaugurated on 26 August 2012.
The circular trail Giro delle 4 frazioni also adds a cultural element: it highlights the church dedicated to Saints Vigilius and Valentin. This makes it possible to explore the town’s history not only through individual dates, but also in connection with a circular trail and a specific religious building.
Art and destinations in the surrounding area
Parco d’Arte Lusan opened in 2020. It is a thematic centre for contemporary art in the natural setting of the Valle dei Laghi, in the municipality of Vallelaghi. The installations are made from different materials and are complemented by explanatory panels. The park thus focuses on the relationship between art and landscape, without requiring you to limit yourself to a traditional museum.
The surrounding area of Vezzano is also home to the Museo Storico delle Truppe Alpine and MUSE Museo delle Scienze, both museums. The Palazzo Geremia and Palazzo Pretorio palaces are likewise located nearby. Nearby peaks include Monte Ranzo, Monte Gazza, Canfedin and Lavachel. When selecting accommodation in Vezzano, you can use these various natural and cultural themes as a guide for planning your individual days.
