Historic Fighine

Fighine combines defensive architecture, a church interior and historical tradition. The present-day central fortress of the Castello di Fighine retains a quadrangular shape with three corner towers, including the distinctly higher square Torre Vecchia. This creates a clearly recognisable architectural motif through which the character of the village can be understood at a glance.

The fortification includes defensive walls approximately 1.5 metres thick, interrupted by small round towers. It is precisely the interplay of the regular ground plan, the distinctive corner tower and the massive walls that makes the castle interesting for visitors who enjoy exploring historic architecture through specific details.

Church within the Fortification

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo uses one of the towers of the fortification as its apse. Its single-nave layout, rafter roof and terracotta floor give the church interior its own clearly recognisable, matter-of-fact design.

Behind the main altar of the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is a painting of Saint Michael by Bonichi of Lucignano, dating from 1750. The church also contains paintings depicting saints from the Umbrian school of Orvieto and the Florentine school.

Traces of the Village’s History

Fighine is first documented in connection with the Pieve di Santa Maria de Fighine in the Placitum of 1058. The Castello di Fighine is also associated with an edict of 1266, through which Emperor Frederick of Swabia transferred it to the Viscount of Campiglia. Both dates give the village’s history a far-reaching chronological framework without limiting Fighine to a single period.

Outside the walls of Fighine, you can park near Santa Maria delle Grazie and walk uphill to the main entrance. Inside the walls, small lanes and stairways lead to the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo. The Sentiero Le Fighine begins at a car park just outside the historic centre of San Casciano dei Bagni. Croce di Fighine, a wooden cross in a pine forest, stands along the Sentiero Le Fighine.

The Parco Archeologico Naturalistico Di Belvedere, the Grotte paleolitiche di Belverde and Monte Cetona are located in the area around Fighine. The Parco Archeologico Naturalistico Di Belvedere is a sight listed as an ancient site, the Grotte paleolitiche di Belverde is a cave and Monte Cetona is a mountain.
