Castello di Itieli and Its Border History

Castello di Itieli is located on a mountain ridge, at almost 600 metres above sea level, in a mountain hollow among the mountains that dominate the Terni Valley. It was built in the late Middle Ages as a defensive outpost along the Byzantine-Lombard border. In documents from the 13th and 14th centuries, the complex is recorded as Castrum Ithiulorum and as Castello degli Itieli.

The castle's structural orientation is also clear: the entrance lies downhill and is protected by the Torre degli Aimuccis.

Churches, Altar and Memorial Sites

In the Chiesa di San Nicola da Bari, the left side altar contains a restored wooden altar structure. Its painting depicts the Madonna with the Christ Child, as well as Saints Cassius and Joseph Calasanzio. A second church dedicated to Saint Mary is connected to an ancient gate and the battlement walkway.

The Madonna della Neve Chapel is the surviving remnant of a church believed to date from the mid-17th century. The Borgo Itieli also contains a sculpture commemorating Angelo Leonardi, a member of the military who came from Itieli. The Giro del Censo is a walking route of about 1.2 kilometres that runs completely around the area near the summit of the Monte Censo of the same name near Itieli.
