Montoro: Historic Center, Trails and Wine

Montoro lies on a golden-yellow hill and overlooks the final section of the valley formed by the Nera River. The town combines sacred buildings, traces of fortified settlements, forest trails and its own wine offerings. Historic Center and Historic Buildings

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, together with the streets and squares, forms part of Montoro’s historic center. The building dates from the 14th century. The Chiesa Baronale di Sant’Egidio is dedicated to Saint Egidius, the patron saint of Montoro. An ancient watchtower is incorporated into the noble residence known as Palazzo Patrizi-Montoro.

The Castello di Montoro is also known as Castello Baronale and is privately owned; it houses a museum with evidence of everyday life in the past. The town therefore brings together several historical points of interest: the historic center with its church, streets and squares, the noble residence with its watchtower, and the castle with its museum function.

Montoro Vecchio and Its Long History

Montoro Vecchio consists of the ruins of an ancient fortified settlement. This ancient settlement was established by the Byzantines to control the Gole del Nera and was destroyed by the Landsknechts in 1527. The name Montoro first appears in 857 in a confirmation by Louis II of the possessions and privileges of Farfa Abbey.

The Montoro aqueduct is also one of the town’s historical landmarks. It was commissioned by the Marquises Patrizi and ceremonially inaugurated in 1858. Those interested in the development of settlements, fortifications and regional history will therefore find several periods and different forms of architectural heritage in Montoro.

Trails to Stifone

A walkable trail leads from Montoro to Stifone through a thousand-year-old forest. In addition, a restored old route leads from the ancient castle of Montoro to Stifone and to the port of delle Mole. In Stifone, the route from Montoro to Stifone reaches the Gole del Nera cycling route. These trail connections also make the town appealing to visitors who would like to combine their stay with walks and experiences in the landscape.

You can park in Piazza Baronale, visit the church and the castle, and then enter the village. For getting oriented locally, this square therefore provides a practical starting point between arrival, historic buildings and access to the village.
