Malcontenta between Palladio, Canals and History

Malcontenta combines significant architecture, religious local history, and a landscape shaped by water. At its heart is Villa Foscari, also known by the name “La Malcontenta.” Other highlights include the parish church with its distinctive historical title, the Sostegno Idraulico at Piazza Malcontenta, and several museums in the surrounding area.

Villa Foscari and Historic Buildings

Villa Foscari was built by Andrea Palladio for the Venetian patrician brothers Nicolò and Alvise Foscari. Construction is dated to the period from 1554 to 1557, while the design is attributed to the years 1555 to 1560. The villa therefore represents a clearly defined period in Venetian architectural history and gives Malcontenta a particularly distinctive cultural connection.

The Sostegno Idraulico of Malcontenta, a historic building, stands at Piazza Malcontenta. The structure links the name of the place with the water management system that is also visible in the canals and along the Brenta.

Church, Abbey and Visual Memory

Since 1919, the church of Malcontenta has been dedicated to Saint Hilary. The parish church of Malcontenta also bears the title “abbey church” in honor of the old abbey that existed there around the year 1000. These two connections give the local history a religious and temporal depth that extends beyond Renaissance architecture.

The virtual MUMA museum is conceptually located in Malcontenta and aims to tell and honor the history of the place. Room 16 of MUMA displays historic photographs, postcards, and images relating to the visual memory of Malcontenta. The Ecomuseo le Terre del Brenta, the Scuola di San Rocco, Ca' Rezzonico, and Palazzo Grassi are museums in the vicinity of Malcontenta.

The Brenta, Canals and Route Connections

The Canale Bondante branches off from the Brenta at the level of Malcontenta’s center. Another connection to the waterways can be seen at the Foscara Canal: on the route, after Malcontenta, the canal’s weir is crossed. The Foscara is a relief canal of the Brenta. Together with the Canale Bondante, it creates a concrete picture of the waterways that help shape the landscape around Malcontenta.

A route along the Naviglio Brenta reaches Malcontenta and points out Palladio’s work there, known as “La Malcontenta.” This route connection links the place with Villa Foscari and makes it clear why Malcontenta can be regarded both as a cultural and historical destination and in connection with a journey along the Naviglio Brenta.

Surroundings with Islands and Beach

There are also various landscape destinations in the area around Malcontenta. Spiaggia Lungomare d'Annunzio beach is located near Malcontenta. San Giorgio in Alga, Tronchetto, and San Secondo are islands in the vicinity of Malcontenta.
