Mozzagrogna: History between the Sangro Valley and the Costa dei Trabocchi
Between the Sangro Valley and the Costa dei Trabocchi
Mozzagrogna lies on a strip of hills overlooking the Sangro Valley. Its location gives the town a clear connection to the surrounding landscape. When choosing accommodation, road access is also a separate consideration: the Lanciano–Fossacesia provincial road skirts the northern part of the area and connects Mozzagrogna and Villa Romagnoli directly with Lanciano and the Costa dei Trabocchi. To the south, the Fondo Valle Sangro expressway touches the area; the S.P. Pedemontana connects it with places farther inland.
Historical traces in Mozzagrogna and Villa Romagnoli
Several historical traces stand side by side in the townscape and surrounding landscape. Villa Marcantonio has been protected as a site of cultural interest since September 17, 2009, is located directly in the historic town center, overlooks the Sangro Valley, and was designed by Gino Coppedè. At Piazza San Rocco, Chiesa San Rocco is protected as a cultural heritage site; the corresponding review took place on August 11, 2011. In Villa Romagnoli, Chiesa Maria SS. della Vittoria is protected as a cultural heritage site; the review took place on November 15, 2011.
This focus is complemented by preserved cellars with brick vaults on Via Garibaldi and the only surviving local “votarell” in Mozzagrogna. Villa Romagnoli also preserves elements of the rural architectural fabric. Castello di Sette was built by the Lombards after the destruction of Lanciano in 571. More recent history includes the almost complete destruction of Mozzagrogna by bombing during the Second World War, as the town was located on the Gustav Line.
Experiences and local events
For an active exploration of the area, there is the 27th Passeggiata Ecologica: it leads visitors to discover the local area; the meeting point is at 8:00 a.m. at Piazza della Vittoria in Villa Romagnoli. TrebbiAmo Romagnoli is a historical re-enactment of threshing; the third edition was announced. As part of the patron saint celebrations in honor of San Rocco, Ferragosto in Festival was held on August 15 and 16, featuring DJ Georgia Mos on August 15 and Povia on August 16.
The local food culture also offers specific points of interest. In Villa Romagnoli, the Festa paesana della Fava was announced for Saturday, April 18, from 5:30 p.m. In Mozzagrogna, a festival dedicated to ham, bread, olive oil, and local wine takes place in July. Agriturismo De Luca is located in a recently restored 18th-century mill.
If you are looking for a hotel or other accommodation, you can assess Mozzagrogna based on two questions: Are you primarily drawn to the combination of valley views, history, and local events, or is orienting yourself around these roads more important to you? To compare other places, you can also consider Casalincontrada Casalincontrada, Ortona Ortona, Castiglione Messer Marino Castiglione Messer Marino, Casoli Casoli, Scerni Scerni, Perano Perano, Pizzoferrato Pizzoferrato and Chieti Chieti.
