Paglieta – medieval history and regional wines

Paglieta combines medieval history, religious buildings, peasant culture and regional wines. The town is situated on a hill 235 metres above sea level, south of the Sangro River, and offers panoramic views over the Sangro Valley. Medieval Walls and Churches

The medieval settlement of Paglieta was enclosed by powerful walls in the year 1200. The Torre della Porta is built entirely of brick. The Torrione Medievale was part of Paglieta’s old ring of walls and dates from the 14th century.

The churches also offer precise historical points of reference. The Chiesa Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo was originally founded in the 16th century. The present building was constructed between 1807 and 1841 on the site of an old chapel and has three naves separated by pillars. The Chiesa di San Canziano dates from the 12th century, while the Chiesa di San Rocco was built in the 16th century.

Traces of a Roman bridge in Paglieta belong to the older historical tradition. Traces of a Tratturo route have also been preserved in the Cansano–Colle Limite area.

Museum and Local Culture

The Museum of Folk Traditions and Peasant Culture broadens the perspective from architecture to everyday life. The collection of typical artefacts from the Sangro Valley includes everyday objects, work tools, traditional costumes and documentation on folk singing. In this way, alongside its buildings, Paglieta also showcases traditional aspects of the region’s way of life.

Walks and Traditional Events

The Passeggiata Ecologica reached its 17th edition in 2026 and was organised as a traditional event by the Pro Loco di Paglieta. In 2025, it also included Walking Yoga. Aspettando Sentieri reached its sixth edition in 2025 and was likewise organised as a traditional event by the Pro Loco di Paglieta.

Wine and Cuisine from Paglieta

The connection between wine and cuisine is also part of the local experience. The Cantina Sociale di Paglieta was founded in 1970 and offers quality wines to the public. In Paglieta, the wines Montepulciano, Cerasuolo and Trebbiano are paired with Maccheroni alla chitarra. These are square-cut spaghetti served with a ragù made from a mixture of beef, pork or lamb.
