Sant'Eusanio del Sangro: Nature and Culture

Lago di Serranella and its birdlife

Lago di Serranella lies at the confluence of the Sangro and Aventino and is an important resting area for migratory birds. 218 bird species have been recorded at the lake, including osprey, black stork, crane, flamingo, spoonbill and grey heron. Piane d'Archi railway station is located in the vicinity of Lago di Serranella. This allows nature observation and orientation in the surrounding area to be considered as a separate focus when planning your trip.

Palazzo De Titta and the history of the town

The historic centre is home to Palazzo De Titta, an Art Nouveau villa dating from the early 20th century. The building was renamed “Cenacolo di Fiorinvalle” and served as a cultural salon for artists and writers from Abruzzo. Inside are the original furnishings of the house, items from the estate of Cesare De Titta, historical postcards and photographs, as well as a bust of the poet.

The older history also reaches far back: as early as 165, Sant'Eusanio del Sangro, under the name Euxanum, held an important position at the fairs of Lanciano. The area of Sant'Eusanio del Sangro was crossed by the Gustav Line during the Second World War. Works by local artisans are preserved in the Chiesa dell'Assunta.

River, festivals and local traditions

Rafting on the Sangro River at the foot of the Oasi di Serranella offers soft rafting amid nature. In addition, the Roccascalegna–Sant'Eusanio del Sangro stage leads to Sant'Eusanio del Sangro. If you would like to plan your trip around local events, the Festa Patronale di San Filippo Neri is scheduled from 23 to 26 May. On the eve of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, tall fires known as the Fuochi della Concezione are traditionally lit.

I Giochi Popolari are scheduled in Sant'Eusanio del Sangro for the end of June. Le Botteghe Artigiane - Arte e Artigianato Artistico is usually scheduled for September. Il Presepe Vivente is scheduled for the Christmas season. These dates complement the religious festivals with games, handicrafts and a winter tradition.
