Letters, Textiles and Historic Architecture

The historic 18th-century Palazzo Valignani houses the Museo della Lettera d'Amore. It preserves around 25,000 letters from the competition of the same name and from donated collections of correspondence. The museum also permanently displays around 3,500 letters from believers to Pope John Paul II.

The Museo Abiti e Tessuti tradizionali abruzzesi is also located in Palazzo Valignani, Via Castelferrato 2, Torrevecchia Teatina. The ethnographic collections focus on family weaving. On display are original traditional garments from the years 1800 to 1920, copies and philological reconstructions, hand-painted terracotta figures, watercolours and a themed library.

The Palazzo dei Baroni was built in 1743 by Federico Valignani in Torrevecchia and modelled on the Villa d'Este in Tivoli. Its “Giardino” covers 5,000 m² of vegetation left over from the former botanical garden and provides spaces for leisure as well as recreational and relaxing activities. The Church of San Giuseppe in Torrevecchia Teatina is protected under Article 10 of Legislative Decree 42/2004 pursuant to Decree D.M. 3240 of 13/05/2013.

Hills, Viewpoints and the Alento River

The green hills, where grapes, olives and vegetables are cultivated, slope gently down towards the Alento River. Dense vegetation alternates with isolated farmhouses across the landscape. Between Torrevecchia and Castelferrato lies Pinetina di Valle Paro, with views of the Maiella and the Adriatic Sea.

Pinetina Fontizze leads to a viewpoint over the Valle dell'Inferno. At the Colli di Castelferrato, the “oasi dei laghetti” allows hikers to reach the Alento River on foot via the Spirito and Castelferrato ditches.

Wine Route and Outdoor Activities

The regional wine route “Tra i filari dei pregiati vini d'Abruzzo” runs through Francavilla al Mare, Bucchianico, Ripa Teatina, Chieti and Torrevecchia Teatina. As a circular route, it runs from Francavilla al Mare via Bucchianico, Ripa Teatina and Chieti back to Francavilla al Mare. The routes on offer allow for trekking, cycling excursions and horseback riding. In the Torrevecchia area, there are also paths for recreational cycling and horse-riding activities.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

To reach Torrevecchia Teatina, take the Pescara Ovest–Chieti exit on the A14 or the Chieti exit on the A25. The route then continues via Chieti and towards Francavilla al Mare along the Fondo Valle Alento or Risalento provincial road, or from Tricalle along the Teatina provincial road.
