Castle and Ancient History in Alfedena

Alfedena combines impressive reminders of its past with paths through forests and river gorges. The early medieval castle survives as a ruin with impressive walls and an octagonal Norman tower. The tower has an octagonal ground plan and dates from the 10th to the 11th century.

Alfedena’s streets feature paving stones, stone doorposts and exterior staircases. A distinct local tradition is seen at the A te Pumba mé festival in honor of the goddess Pomona: groups of young people move through the narrow streets, celebrate the arrival of spring, and use horns and cowbells.

For walks and hikes, the Campitelli–Passo dei Monaci route is connected to the hiking and walking trails in Alfedena. A hike along the Sangro in the Alfedena section follows a path that begins near Alfedena’s main square and leads into the river’s gorges. The Cascata della Penna lies in Alfedena’s dense forest and adds another landscape highlight to this nature-focused side of the town.
