Bagno between history and mountain landscapes

The historical perspective of Bagno begins with Civita di Bagno: the settlement is identified with the ancient episcopal city of Forcona. In the middle Aterno valley basin, near the hamlet of Civita di Bagno, lies the Civitas Sancti Maximi archaeological site. Roman structures have been preserved and are visible beneath the former cathedral of San Massimo. These specific places and findings give the historical side of the destination a clear shape.

The landscape includes the Monte Ocre–Monte Cagno mountain group. It is approximately 16 km long and up to around 7 km wide. Geomorphologically and geographically, it separates the Aquila basin and the Roio plain from the Lucoli Valley and the Campo Felice plain. If you assess landscapes according to their spatial structure, this classification provides a precise framework for planning your trip.

Local character and products

Cipolla di Bagno is a local ecotype with a slightly flattened shape, golden skin and white, almost translucent flesh. It has a slightly sweet taste, is firm and has an intense aroma tending towards sweetness. It is grown in the Aquila basin in the hamlets of Bagno, Civita di Bagno and Monticchio, which belong to the city of L’Aquila, as well as partly in the municipality of Ocre, on level, irrigated soils. Cipolla di Bagno is recognised as a Slow Food Presidio.

Lake, fishing and festival tradition

Lago di San Raniero lies between the settlements of Civita di Bagno and San Benedetto. Its outflow is located at the extreme northeastern edge; it flows into the Aterno, but is separated from it by human intervention. This creates an isolated habitat.

A tradition of recreational fishing at Lago di San Raniero can be traced back to the early 1950s. The local anglers’ association dates its origins to 1951; the first licence for recreational fishing was issued by the Province of L’Aquila in 1972.

The patron saint’s festival of San Raniero takes place every year on the last Sunday in June in the settlements that now make up Bagno. The celebration includes a procession in which statues of saints are carried on people’s shoulders.

Monte Ocre and different route options

Monte Ocre is considered one of the Apennine mountains particularly suitable for ski mountaineering. For the ascent of Monte Ocre from Ripa di Bagno, an out-and-back route along the same path is suggested. Alternatively, a circular route with an ascent along the ridge and a descent through the valleys is recommended. This allows you to weigh up different route options if mountain excursions are the main focus of your stay.

When choosing accommodation in Bagno, you can use culture, the lake, festival traditions or the mountains as a guide to the preferred focus of your stay.
