Capistrello between rock, water and paths

Capistrello can be explored through three closely interwoven perspectives: rock architecture, water and paths. The outlet of the underground Emissario di Claudio canal in Capistrello displays several structural features: it consists of a round arch made of radial wedge stones set on masonry of local limestone in opus reticulatum; above it is an artificially shaped rock face. This gives you a tangible way to access a structure in which the material, masonry technique and worked rock surface are directly interconnected.

Rock architecture and water

Water also shapes the perception of the area. The waterfall in Capistrello's river park is approximately 12 metres high and creates a clear landscape accent. Madonna della Cascata and Monte Aurunzo

Madonna del Monte is one of Capistrello's patron saints. The small church on the ridge of Monte Aurunzo can be reached from Rucetto in approximately one hour on foot and is used for religious services only in May. This makes the site a combination of a clearly defined route and a clearly limited ecclesiastical use. For day planning, this approximate walking time is a separate time component of the route.

Hiking trails to the historic centre

For route planning, the Cammino Mariano dei Marsi leads into the historic centre of Capistrello and, after the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate di Padova, connects with the Emissario trail, the European long-distance hiking trail E1 and CAI Trail No. 401 Civitella Roveto–Capistrello.
