Castelvecchio Subequo between mountain landscapes and cultural history
Castelvecchio Subequo on Monte Putano
Castelvecchio Subequo is located on a rocky promontory of Monte Putano. The town lies within the Sirente-Velino Regional Nature Park and is therefore situated in a protected area. In the town itself, archaeological, religious, and early Christian traces also appear directly alongside one another.
San Francesco, museums, and historical evidence
The religious and cultural heritage includes the Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi and its associated monastery. The complex, comprising both buildings, has been a national monument since 1902. The designation as a national monument refers to the combined church and monastery complex. The Museo d'Arte Sacra is also housed in the San Francesco monastery. The museum preserves finely crafted reliquaries. For those interested in culture, sacred architecture, reliquaries, and archaeological remains represent different focal points in Castelvecchio Subequo. The focus for culture enthusiasts is therefore not on a single building: the church, monastery, and museum combine sacred architecture with preserved objects.
The Archaeological Museum adjoins the San Francesco monastery. It preserves materials from ancient Superaequum. Superaequum was an ancient city of the Peligni, whose materials are preserved in the adjoining Archaeological Museum. Castelvecchio Subequo is regarded as the guardian of this ancient Superaequum, which is described as one of the three most important cities of the Peligni. In this way, the monastery stands directly beside an institution that reflects the town's archaeological connection.
The archaeological remains include the remains of a temple dedicated to Ercole Vincitore. The dedication to Ercole Vincitore belongs to the temple remains themselves; the catacomb cemetery is dated to the 4th century. There is also a remarkable catacomb cemetery from the 4th century. Alongside the materials from ancient Superaequum, the town is therefore also associated with tangible architectural and funerary evidence.
Visiting and finding your way around
Access to the Catacomba di Castelvecchio Subequo is via the Ufficio Info Parco Castelvecchio. Anyone planning to visit the Catacomba should contact the Ufficio Info Parco Castelvecchio. The Chiesa e convento di S. Francesco is also listed as a sight on the Gagliano Aterno–Castelvecchio Subequo stage.
A local tradition is the holy bread for Sant’Agata. For Sant’Agata, the bread and the spring form part of the same local custom. The bread is blessed and dipped into the water of a nearby spring with the same name. The Pagnotte di Sant’Agata are prepared as round loaves whose shape resembles a female breast. The distinctive feature therefore lies in the combination of bread, blessing, spring, and the traditional shape. Alongside the archaeological and religious evidence, this tradition is one of the local features that gives Castelvecchio Subequo its distinctive cultural character.
