Lucoli – Nature, Culture and Campo Felice
Lucoli between Nature and Culture
Lucoli lies on the northern edge of Sirente Velino Regional Nature Park. The mountains in the Lucoli area offer opportunities for hiking. For planning your trip, the town combines nature trails with religiously influenced culture, local products and the Campo Felice experience. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first weigh up whether to focus on Lucoli itself or on the offerings in Campo Felice.
Hiking on Documented Trails
The unpaved Via San Martinello leads from Lucoli Alto through meadows and woodland for around 3 km downhill to the village of San Martinello. Peschio Cancelli can be reached via an unpaved path that begins directly beside the Chapel of St. Anthony. The Peschio Cancelli route can be continued along the unpaved path to Casamaina. A trail leads to the summit of Monte Rotondo at an altitude of 2,064 metres.
Churches and Historical Testimonies
The Church of San Menna is the oldest church in Lucoli. It houses a processional cross created by the goldsmith Paolo di Meo Quadraro, who came from Sulmona, and dating from the early 15th century. The origins of the Abbey of San Giovanni Battista date back to 1077. The abbey contains the Farina organ from 1500. The 1994 restoration of the Basilica of San Giovanni Battista returned it to its original style.
Festivals with Processions and Lights
The Festa della Beata Cristina is celebrated on 16 August in the hamlet of Colle. During the procession held every year on 16 August, the statue of the Blessed is carried through Colle to the Abbey of San Giovanni. The Fiaccolata di San Michele Arcangelo takes place every year on 31 December and includes a torchlight procession downhill from the small church on the hill to the square in Vado Lucoli.
Campo Felice in Summer and Winter
Campo Felice is a ski resort in Abruzzo where alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding are possible. A chairlift can take you to the Chalet del Bosco. Excursions on foot and horseback are also possible in Campo Felice. This area complements Lucoli's hiking and cultural experiences with further activities.
Regional Products from Lucoli
Since 1972, Caseificio Campo Felice has been producing cheese in Lucoli using only fresh milk from the Conca Aquilana. Production and the main shop are located in Collimento di Lucoli. At La Casetta del Caseificio in Campo Felice, you can taste hot sandwiches, platters of cheese and cured meats, as well as wine and beer, on site.
