Opi between Val Fondillo and mountain culture

Opi combines the landscape of Val Fondillo with nature observation, local history and mountain culture. Those who choose the town for a trip to Italy can alternate between a path through river landscapes, insights into the animal world and several small museums. Historic buildings and wide views across Abruzzo National Park are also part of the town’s character.

Val Fondillo as a landscape experience

Val Fondillo is a glacial valley that stretches along the Fondillo River and is rich in springs. Park trail F2 follows the fish-rich river with its clear water, which flows into the Sangro. Along the way, the landscape passes through lush riverside vegetation with willows and areas surrounded by beautiful beech forests. This creates a nature experience in which watercourses, woodland and open sections of trail are closely connected.

The Val Fondillo–Valico Passaggio dell'Orso route is designated as park trail F2. It begins at Parcheggio Val Fondillo and ends at Valico Passaggio dell'Orso. The Marsican brown bear is also part of the wildlife of Val Fondillo along the F2 trail; hikers occasionally spot it.

Wildlife and ancient forests in Val Fondillo

Near the Centro Visita del Camoscio di Opi there is a viewpoint from which visitors can observe chamois. The animals live in a neighboring wildlife area in a semi-free state. The Centro Visita itself is a small museum in Opi’s historic center. Information panels and dioramas provide information about the Apennine chamois and complement the natural features of Val Fondillo with an illustrative exhibition.

Val Fondillo is also home to one of the five sites of the Foresta Vetusta recognized as UNESCO heritage. The Regio Tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela also runs through the valley. It is one of the most extensive “grass roads.” In Opi, the natural environment, historic route tradition and development of the woodland landscape can therefore be explored as interconnected yet distinct themes.

Museums between nature, archaeology and mountaineering

The Centro Visita di Val Fondillo is dedicated, through an exhibition tour, to the ancient history of the woodland landscape and the people who lived there. The presentation ranges from prehistory and the intensive use of the forests in the past century to the ongoing changes brought about by humans. The Museo Archeologico in the Opi area also preserves parts of the finds from the Val Fondillo necropolis. On display are remains of grave goods, weapons and ceramics.

Another facet is presented by the Museo dello Sci e della Montagna. The small museum is dedicated to skiing and the mountains and displays a large part of the skiing equipment used since the past century. The private museum “C’era una Volta…”, managed by the Pro Loco, focuses instead on the community of Opi. Everyday objects, household items and preserved tools illustrate past customs and ways of life.

Churches and historic traces in the town

The church of Santa Maria Assunta lies halfway between the new center and the historic town center. Damaged several times by earthquakes, it was rebuilt in its present form in the 17th century. Its bell tower, restored in 1556, still points to the Romanesque structure of the church founded in the 12th century. The chapel of San Giovanni Battista stands near the main square. It was built at the beginning of the 17th century during the Baroque period by Vincenzo Rossi, a local nobleman. Recent restoration work brought wooden decorations, stucco and polychrome marble to light.

The view from Belvedere di Opi

Belvedere di Opi lies outside the historic town center and in front of the old Borgo. From there, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Abruzzo National Park. Starting with Monte Marsicano, visible on the left, the view encompasses Monte Greco, Monte Amaro, Monte Petroso, Camosciara and the entire surrounding valley. The viewpoint complements the trails and museums with a clear spatial perspective of the mountain landscape.
