Villavallelonga: Nature Trails, Village History and Local Traditions

Villavallelonga combines nature observation, short routes and a distinctive village history. Nature Garden and Marsican Brown Bear

The botanical garden dedicated to Loreto Grande was established in 1984 in the Villavallelonga area of Parco Nazionale D'Abruzzo. At the Centro Visita dell'Orso, a well-equipped nature trail leads past an enclosure. A Marsican brown bear lives there in semi-wild conditions.

Short Routes and an Easy Hike

The Percorso delle Fonti is a short, easy walking route; it can begin in the village square or at the Fonte Vecchia. The route to the Grotta del Tasseto is an easy hike of approximately 6 kilometres and begins at the Pozzo spring in Località Aceretta. The two routes therefore involve different timeframes when planning a day stage in the area.

Village History, Centre and Notable Places

The village's history is particularly evident in La Villa, Villavallelonga's historic centre at an altitude of 1,005 metres. From there, there is a sweeping view over the valley. Villavallelonga developed into an independent village around the year 1000 at the foot of Monte Quaresima. Notable places include the Church of Madonna delle Grazie. The “dead elm tree” of Villavallelonga is regarded by local residents as a monument.

Museum and Depictions of Nature

The Museo Loreto Grande complements these historical and nature-related themes with themed rooms. They range from the life of the botanist Grande to a sensory room recreating a forest. The museum thus combines biography and depictions of nature, offering another way to explore the history and landscape of Villavallelonga.

Frascareje, Panarda and Festivals

Frascareje is a culinary speciality: hand-made grains of dough made from flour, eggs and water, served with sheep's cheese sauce and Pecorino. The Panarda tradition has its own particular place in the calendar. On the evening of 16 January, many families in Villavallelonga renew the tradition by inviting relatives and friends to a dinner that lasts all night.

The festivals also structure the course of the year in the village. The celebration of Sant'Antonio Abate takes place in Villavallelonga on 16 and 17 January. Villavallelonga's Sheep Festival takes place on the second Sunday in August. Thus, tradition and celebration take centre stage in January, while the Sheep Festival is the focus in August.
