Discover Bolognano: Art, History and Nature

Bolognano combines medieval history with a remarkable mix of art venues, archaeological sites and nature experiences. In the town, you can discover permanent contemporary installations and distinctive underground architecture; walks lead to a waterfall, through historic vineyards or along a path between two parts of the town. History and Contemporary Art in the Town

Bolognano has medieval origins and was under the rule of the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria for a long time. In addition to the old town structures, this historical influence is also evident in the lanes, where you will find the Case dell’Arte, della Musica e della Critica. Various parts of the town are also home to permanent contemporary art installations, including „Il luogo della natura“.

The Piantagione Paradise in Bolognano offers a unique combination of art and architecture. It is an 800-square-metre, two-storey underground structure designed by the German painter, sculptor and performance artist Joseph Beuys (1921–1986). The private Paradise Museum of Joseph Beuys, dedicated to his work, complements it. The museum asks visitors to contact it before their visit.

Archaeological Traces and the Orta Landscape

The Grotta dei Piccioni is an important archaeological site dating back to the Neolithic period. Grotta Scura is also considered an archaeological site of regional and national significance because finds there provide evidence of human activity dating back to the Neolithic period. At the same time, it is a fossil river cave and therefore a karst cave formed by the Orta River when it flowed at a higher elevation than it does today. Together, these two aspects give a trip to Bolognano historical and geological depth.

The Valle dell’Orta Regional Nature Reserve, established in 1989, represents the area’s natural environment. It is part of Maiella National Park, covers 378 hectares and extends across the territories of the municipalities of Sant’Eufemia a Majella, Roccacaramanico, San Vittorino, Caramanico Terme, Salle, Musellaro, San Valentino and Bolognano in the Province of Pescara. Its size and inclusion in the national park make the reserve a distinct focus alongside the town’s cultural attractions.

Walks, Trails and Vineyards

The Cascata della Cisterna waterfall can be reached on foot from Bolognano town centre. The route leads around the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate, combining a short excursion with an opportunity to get your bearings in the town. Another hiking trail connects Piano d’Orta and Madonna del Monte, both of which are parts of Bolognano. Access to the Grotta dei Piccioni requires a reservation with the park’s information office in Bolognano.
