Campitello amid History, Church Art and the Oglio

Campitello brings together medieval territorial history, sacred art and the river landscape of the Oglio. The town’s medieval history is linked to a Curtis owned by the Canossa family. Various Roman structures have been uncovered in the settlement. Historically, Campitello and Marcaria, located on the border of the Mantuan area along the Oglio River, controlled the bridges and fords on both banks and thereby acquired considerable strategic and military importance. The Parish Church of Campitello

The present-day parish church of Campitello is a late Baroque building completed in 1793. Frescoes and valuable furnishings from the Mantuan monastery of del Carmine adorn the church. The parish church also houses a Montesanti organ. According to the parish, it is still in operation. The church therefore brings together architectural history, frescoes, monastic furnishings and an organ in one place.

Religious Festivals Throughout the Year

The course of the year is also marked by religious festivals. Campitello’s traditional patronal festival in honor of Celestine I takes place on the third Sunday in October. On July 16, Campitello celebrates the feast of its co-patron Madonna del Carmine, with a procession through the town and a social gathering. The two dates connect Campitello with religious practice and community celebration, but mark different points in the calendar.
