Casalmoro: Festival Tradition, Churches and River Landscape
Tradition and Local History
Casalmoro reveals its character through a combination of a long festival tradition, religious architecture, archaeological traces and a landscaped river area. If you want to understand Italian local history not only through buildings but also through recurring customs, the Festa della Madonna del Dosso comes to the fore: It is celebrated every year on 21 November, and the tradition can be traced back at least two centuries. This makes the festival date a distinctive cultural reference point for planning your trip.
The parish church of Santo Stefano Protomartire makes an architectural statement with its significant Baroque façade and dates from 1744. The Torre Mangeri is also known locally as “Casotto”. The military structure was built in the mid-15th century, during a period of tensions between the Duchy of Mantua and the Republic of Venice.
Corte Castello – also known as “Cascina Castello” – is a historic building on the outskirts of Casalmoro in the province of Mantua. Next to this building is a converted barn that now serves as a multipurpose space for events and cultural activities. Historical building fabric and a contemporary cultural function therefore come together in this place.
A characteristic feature of the Festa della Madonna del Dosso is the setting off of mortaretti, or firecrackers. The first are set off in the afternoon of the preceding day at 4:30 p.m.; further explosions precede the liturgical celebrations.
River Landscape and Paths
Parco del Moro was established in 2006 to protect and enhance the river area within the municipality of Casalmoro. The way the watercourse is managed is therefore just as much a part of the townscape as its historical and religious themes.
The park offers a network for cyclists and pedestrians that passes through both natural and human-shaped areas. It is precisely the alternation between different types of landscape that makes the park a distinctive natural feature of Casalmoro.
Archaeological Traces of Vezzole
Archaeological excavations at Vezzole uncovered evidence of Neolithic culture and the subsequent Bronze Age. Finds from the Late Bronze Age include bronze objects. Gallic graves dating from around 200 to 300 BC were also discovered. The chronological sequence therefore extends from early farming cultures through the Bronze Age to a significantly later pre-Christian period.
Orientation for Your Stay
Casalmoro is crossed by State Road 343, the “Asolana”. The Santuario della Madonna del Dosso provides another geographical and religious focal point: It was built on an artificial hill to protect it from flooding by the Chiese River. In Casalmoro, festival culture, architectural history, archaeology and the river landscape thus come together within a clearly defined local context.
