Gonzaga Porticoes and Teatro Paolo Giacometti

Gazzuolo combines the Gonzaga porticoes with its location on the Oglio. The Gonzaga porticoes were built in the early years of the 16th century at the behest of Ludovico Gonzaga and served as a covered street. The structure extends for 120 metres and comprises thirty arcades. It is supported by 29 columns made of Verona marble, which differ from one another in architectural type and decoration. Teatro Paolo Giacometti is located beneath the Gonzaga porticoes. The long sequence of arcades and the different columns give the building a clearly articulated architectural structure.

Religious Buildings and Gonzaga Heritage

Gazzuolo’s religious buildings are also associated with different historical periods. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Nascente dates from the 17th century. The Oratorio di San Rocco dates from the early years of the 17th century and is designed in the Baroque style. In Gazzuolo, the Preda Pescadura is the only surviving evidence of the Gonzaga fortifications demolished in the 18th century. The Chiesa di San Pietro is considered the Pantheon of the Gonzaga family. Thus, both the period of construction and the respective connection to Gonzaga history are central to the churches.

The History of Audiovisual Media

The Centro della comunicazione audiovisiva Collezione Oreste Coni displays projection and photographic equipment that illustrates the history of audiovisual media from the 1920s to the present day. The period covered therefore extends from the early decades of the 20th century to the present. Alongside churches and porticoes, the development of audiovisual technology also has its own cultural point of reference in Gazzuolo.

The Oglio Landscape and Le Margonare

Gazzuolo lies on the right bank of the Oglio River. The wetlands of the Torbiere di Belforte correspond to an old meander of the Oglio. The Le Margonare cycling and walking path connects Belforte with the Torbiere di Belforte.

Markets and Time-Specific Festivals

The small Il portico delle cose antiche market is dedicated to antiques, hobbies, and vintage items. It takes place every second Sunday of the month in Gazzuolo. For personal trip planning, this recurring Sunday event provides a fixed point in time. The Festa Avis takes place in Gazzuolo in mid-July. The Fiera di Santa Carità takes place in Gazzuolo on the first weekend of August. These two periods can be taken into account when choosing when to travel.
