Palidano appeals to travelers who want to discover Italian history not only through major cities, but also through individual buildings, local connections and public squares. Highlights include an 18th-century residence, a church with older Romanesque elements, a traditional festival and several destinations in the immediate area and the wider region.

Villas and the History of the District

Villa Alessia, formerly Villa Maraini Guerrieri Gonzaga or Villa Maraini-Guerrieri, is an historic 18th-century residence in Palidano. Its history is closely linked to the origins of the district. The old town center was once a simple agricultural farmstead owned by the Gonzaga family. This building therefore brings together architecture and the historical development of Palidano.

Chiesa di San Sisto II

The Chiesa di San Sisto II also brings together several historical periods. It was built in the 18th century and preserves the apse and bell tower of an earlier Romanesque chapel. This chapel is mentioned in documents by Matilde di Canossa. The church also preserves 18th-century stucco work and decorations, as well as paintings by Gennari and Campi. This creates a concentrated cultural point of reference where older and more recent elements of the area's history come together.

Villa Strozzi in Begozzo

Another historical point of reference is the architectural and landscape complex of Villa Strozzi in Begozzo. The complex has ancient origins and dates back at least to the 15th century. When visiting Villa Strozzi, access to the adjacent park is possible; some areas can only be visited on special occasions or as part of organized tours. This differing accessibility of the individual areas is important for your planning.

Square, Festival and Former Clay Pits

At the center of Palidano lies the public Giardino di Piazza Sordello, with its distinctive triangular shape. The traditional Fera dla Pepa takes place there every year. The square thus combines a clearly recognizable design with a recurring local event. The former clay pits of Cave Pascoletto have a different character: they are currently used for sport fishing.

Destinations in the Region

In the immediate vicinity of Palidano is the church of Parrocchia Immacolata Concezione di Suzzara. In the wider region are the Fruttiere di Palazzo Te Museum, Palazzo Te, Soardi Palace, Correggio Beach as a beach, and the Giardini di Piazza Anconetta, Giardini Valentini and Giardini Marani gardens. These different points of reference make it easier to put things into perspective: Palidano combines its own historic sites with other destinations in the region, which can be included in your travel plans depending on your personal interests.
