Poggio Rusco: Churches, Commemorative Culture and Cycle Paths

In Poggio Rusco, church architecture, the remembrance of “Operazione Herring” and the Oltrepò Mantovano cycle network take center stage. The town is also connected by road to the provincial capital and nearby Ferrara, and is home to a strategic railway junction.

Churches and Commemorative Culture

The Chiesa Parrocchiale S.S. Nome di Maria was built between 1748 and 1770 in a restrained Baroque style, based on a design by the architect Nicolini. The Chiesetta/Oratorio del Tagliaferro, completed in 1771, represents a different period. Next to the altar, it has vaulted openings that may have served as galleries for women and honored guests.

The present-day Chiesa di Dragoncello was built in the 1960s based on a design by Prof. Lino Morselli, in memory of those who fell during “Operazione Herring.” Its extraordinary, skyward-reaching form evokes hands folded in prayer while also referring to the paratroopers who descended from the sky.

The Ara Monument also commemorates the paratroopers who fell during “Operazione Herring.” It was inaugurated on April 30, 1965. The Chiesa di Stoppiaro, meanwhile, replaced an earlier, smaller church that was demolished at the beginning of the 17th century.

A Montesanti dating from the late 18th century was reconstructed and expanded by Giovanni Tonoli in 1861. The Torre Falconiera o Colombara (Culumbèra) probably served as a lookout post or as a refuge in times of danger.

Getting There and Regional Orientation

The Strada Provinciale 496 Virgiliana connects Poggio Rusco with the provincial capital and nearby Ferrara. Poggio Rusco is also a strategic railway junction where the Bologna–Verona–Brenner Brenner corridor, which is being expanded, meets the railway connection between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas.

Since 2007, the Rassegna Corale has taken place in Poggio Rusco every autumn. Six choirs perform at the Rassegna Corale, including one choir from abroad.

The Museo Civico Mirandola, the Parrocchia Di Santa Maria Maggiore, the Chiesa del Duomo and Piazzale Costa are located in the surroundings of Poggio Rusco.

Cycling in the Oltrepò Mantovano

The Oltrepò Mantovano cycle network connects villages and hamlets, historic buildings, museums, water-management structures, parks and nature reserves.

It covers more than 470 kilometers. The 48-kilometer gray route “I sapori dell’Oltrepò” also passes through Poggio Rusco. The stated route lengths make it possible to divide a cycling tour into daily stages and plan breaks from the outset.
