Revere on the Po: Culture, Architecture and River Experiences

Understanding the Po at the Museo del Po

The Museo del Po is located in the Palazzo Ducale on Piazza Castello in Revere. It is an ethnographic and anthropological museum devoted entirely to the River Po. The tour is divided into eleven rooms and explores the history of the Po, its territory, wildlife and occupations, as well as the river’s connection with the people living along its banks. An archaeological section displays finds from prehistoric times through the post-medieval period. In the museum, the Po appears both as a natural environment and as a habitat. The chronological range of the finds spans several historical periods and broadens the perspective on the river’s history. Palazzo Ducale and Torre campanaria

The Palazzo Ducale was built from 1444 to 1478 on the orders of Ludovico II, based on the defensive system of Revere Island, which consisted of seven towers. Its C-shaped floor plan encloses a courtyard; the ground floor contains a portico in which Brunelleschi’s influence has been identified. The C-shaped floor plan and the portico draw attention to the spatial design of the Palazzo Ducale. The preserved Torre campanaria belonged to a fortress dating from 1125 and was formerly used to monitor shipping on the Po. These buildings therefore bring together striking architectural forms and the historical importance of the river.

Religious architecture from different periods

The Church of Beata Vergine Annunziata is a late Baroque building constructed between 1750 and 1775 over a church dating from 1472. The Oratorio di San Biagio in Zello is the oldest religious building in Revere. The two buildings point to distinctly different historical periods within religious architecture.
