San Benedetto Po: Monastery, Museum and Trails

The Complesso Monastico di San Benedetto Po is the focal point. The monastery complex was founded in 1007 by Tedaldo di Canossa. The abbey church was rebuilt between 1540 and 1545 by Giulio Romano; older Romanesque and Gothic structural elements were preserved in the process. The abbey church thus combines a 16th-century rebuilding with older Romanesque and Gothic structural elements.

The monastery in San Benedetto Po offers three guided tours. They take place both inside and outside the monastery, providing different perspectives on the complex. The Museo Civico Polironiano was founded in 1977 and is considered one of Italy’s most important ethnographic museums. Its historical and archaeological collection is housed in the 16th-century cellars beneath the refectory. The cellars also house a collection of old agricultural wagons from the Reggio–Modena area.

Stargazing and Regional Attractions

Another specific experience is the Osservatorio Astronomico Aldo Righelli. It is located in Gorgo, a district of San Benedetto Po, at Stradello Gorgo 36. The observatory offers public visits on Saturday evenings from 21:00 to 23:30 by prior reservation.
