Ulassai is considered an open-air museum where urban architecture, nature, and works of art are interconnected. For visitors, this creates a place where cultural impressions and the landscape are not viewed separately. Contemporary art is just as present as the rocky landscape of the limestone Tacchi.

Museums and the Art of Maria Lai

The Stazione dell’Arte is a contemporary art museum dedicated to the personal and artistic development of Maria Lai. Another cultural venue is the CaMuC – Casa Museo Cannas in the heart of Ulassai’s historic centre. The museum was built in the early years of the 20th century and had a significant influence on the social and economic history of Ulassai. In Ulassai, you can therefore encounter both the artistic development of an important figure and a building with close ties to the town’s history.

“Legarsi alla montagna” in Ulassai

In 1981, Maria Lai created “Legarsi alla montagna” in Ulassai, one of the first relational art actions in Italy. During this action, an approximately 27-kilometre-long blue ribbon was cut, distributed, and attached between the town’s houses until it reached Monte Gedili. In this context, the houses of Ulassai and Monte Gedili became components of the same action.

Grotta Su Marmuri and the Tacchi

Grotta Su Marmuri is approximately 850 metres long and reaches heights of up to 70 metres. The limestone Tacchi near Ulassai also shape the landscape and are a destination for climbers from all over the world. The evergreen forests of the Tacchi are home to wildlife protected by the Oasi faunistica di Girisai. You can therefore experience the area from both cultural and landscape perspectives.

Paths among the Karst Rocks

In Ulassai, visitors can walk along dozens of other paths among the karst rocks. These paths complement the view of the Tacchi with a direct engagement with the rocky landscape. This allows you to set your own focus when planning your visit: the paths appeal to visitors interested in nature just as much as the grotto and the forests do, while museums and works of art offer a clear cultural perspective on the town.
