Ussassai brings together forest springs, trails through distinctive landscapes, historic sacred architecture and long-standing village traditions. If you would like to shape your trip around nature, culture and regional flavors, you will find several distinct points of interest here: from the Sorgente di Milisai and Montarbu to the Niala–Is Tostoinus–Is Càcaus route, a Romanesque-Byzantine sanctuary and village festivals.

Forest, springs and wildlife

The Sorgente di Milisai lies in a forest of holm oaks and Mediterranean maquis shrubs. It is also located within the SIC Monti del Gennargentu (ITB021103), which belongs to the Natura 2000 network. Part of Montarbu lies within the territory of Ussassai; the section belonging to Ussassai has been a wildlife sanctuary since 1980. The wildlife of the Montarbu wildlife sanctuary includes deer, wild boar, foxes, squirrels, fallow deer and mouflon. Native Mediterranean trout have been observed along the Riu Donna Pruna.

Trails for hikers and cyclists

The Niala–Is Tostoinus–Is Càcaus route is classified as difficulty level E; it includes trails, rocky sections and some unpaved stretches. In the area around Ussassai, it is approximately 12 km long and has around 600 meters of elevation gain. The Bosco di Niala can be reached by several trails, including section Z20 of the Sentiero Italia. The Niala forest can be explored by bicycle and on foot. This allows you to combine different ways of getting around, while the distance, elevation gain and terrain provide a clear basis for your personal planning.

Water, rest stops and distinctive landscapes

A spring that flows year-round near Is Tostoinus forms a small lake crossed by a stone footbridge. Near Is Tostoinus, a hut in the “a pinnettu” style offers hikers a place to rest or bivouac. Su Tuvu Nieddu is a natural bridge that a river has carved out of limestone over time. At the same time, Su Tuvu Nieddu is an equipped picnic area with springs providing fresh drinking water; the area is also accessible by car from the refreshment venue.

Churches, bridges and art

The Santuario campestre di San Salvatore dates from the 12th century and was built in the Romanesque-Byzantine style. According to tradition, it was the church of Trobigitei. The sanctuary is surrounded by stone cumbessias, which serve as accommodation for the faithful during celebrations. A work by Pinuccio Sciola in Niala consists of six limestone spheres. The Ponte di Irtzioni is also known as the Ponte di San Girolamo and is an iron bridge from the late 19th century. For many, it is considered one of the most characteristic sections of the network served by the tourist train.

Village traditions and local cuisine

Among other specialties, Culurgiones cun sa mècuda and Is coccois prenas are sampled. This gives you a picture of Ussassai in which landscape, history and local food culture each form distinct, clearly recognizable focal points.
