Discover Aggius: Banditry, Art and Valle della Luna
Accommodation in Aggius
Aggius between history, art and granite
Aggius combines historical themes of banditry, public art, typical cuisine and a granite landscape in the surrounding area. These themes come together in Aggius: the Museo del Banditismo represents history, the Museo AAAperto represents street art, Suppa cuata represents cuisine, and Valle della Luna represents granite formations.
Banditry in the former Pretura Palace
The Museo del Banditismo is housed in the historic former Pretura Palace of Aggius. It displays court records and trial documents relating to criminal acts, descriptions of the lives of famous fugitives, weapons used by the Carabinieri to pursue bandits, and historical costumes.
The historical period spans around three centuries: from the mid-16th to the mid-19th century. During this period, Aggius was the center of banditry in Gallura.
Street art and traditional festivals
The Museo AAAperto uses the streets and public spaces of Aggius as exhibition areas for murals, panels, installations and other works of art. As a result, the artworks are located not only in a single building but also in the public spaces of Aggius. Typical events in Aggius also include Holy Week celebrations, tastings of typical local products and wines, and traditional village festivals.
Suppa cuata: a specialty from Aggius
The local cuisine includes Suppa cuata, also known as La Zuppa Gallurese. It is considered Aggius's best-known and most celebrated typical dish. It is prepared with slices of stale bread, soft cheese, grated cheese with parsley and a pinch of pepper, as well as a broth made from veal, lamb or pork. In Aggius, Suppa cuata combines bread, soft cheese, grated cheese, parsley, pepper and meat broth into a regional dish.
Valle della Luna and Nuraghe Izzana
The Piana dei Grandi Sassi, also known as Valle della Luna, is located in the village of Li Parisi on the border between Aggius and Trinità d’Agultu e Vignola. The unpaved paths beside the granite formations are suitable for trekking. At its heart lies Nuraghe Izzana, one of the most significant and best-preserved Nuragic structures in Gallura.
Mountains and churches in the surrounding area
Several mountains are located around Aggius: Monte Lasana, Monte Cuscusone, Monte Litu and Monte Stazzoni. San Biaxiu, a church, is also located in the surrounding area.
Other historic sites in the wider region
The Tomba dei Giganti di Li Lolghi, an ancient site, is located in the wider region around Aggius. The Castello dei Doria - Chiaramonti, a castle, and Santa Maria, a church, are also located in this wider regional area.
