Capo Coda Cavallo: Granite, Sand and the Underwater World
Capo Coda Cavallo Beach lies on a granite headland extending into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The islands of Proratora, Tavolara and Molara protect the beach; Mediterranean maquis and fine white sand characterize its surroundings. In the Capo Coda Cavallo area, you can go diving between underwater walls and in caves with diverse marine fauna. At the Capo Coda Cavallo viewpoint, there are also well-preserved structures of a military post from the Second World War, which was used to observe Allied air forces.
Beaches in the Nearby Area
Spiaggia de La Cinta Beach lies near San Teodoro. It forms a five-kilometre arc of fine white dunes with juniper, sea lily and strawflower beside a clear blue sea. Spiaggia dell'Isuledda Beach is also located nearby. Spiaggia di Porto Ottiolu and Spiaggia Li Cuppulati are in the area around San Teodoro and add further coastal locations to the selection.
Church, Festivals and Maritime History
The rural parish church of San Teodoro d’Oviddè was officially founded in the 1770s. San Teodoro’s religious celebrations include a liturgical festival on 9 November and a popular festival on the third Sunday in June. The Museo civiltà del mare San Teodoro displays archaeological finds from the Punic period, the Roman Republican period, the early and middle Imperial periods, and from Late Antiquity through the Middle Ages. The museum has a library and a multimedia area. The Museo delle civiltà del mare - ICIMAR is located near San Teodoro.
Nature and Historical Destinations in the Wider Area
Under Sardinian Regional Law No. 31/1989, the Monte Nieddu granite massif is protected as an area of particular natural and ecological significance. In Cala Ghjlgolu, there is a rock shaped like a turtle by the wind and sea. The wider regional area around San Teodoro also includes Castello della Fava, the ancient site of Su Monte de S'Ape and the ancient site of Holy Well Sa Testa. The range of destinations therefore extends from geologically shaped landscapes to historical and archaeological sites.
