Sa Castanza: Trails, Culture and Sardinian History

Church, Walk and Rural Library

The village is home to the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built around 1930. The 2023 Scorraboi con Noi walk followed the SP79 on foot to the Monumento del Pastore. It also led to a place where people used to stop for a break during transhumance.

For the 2023 edition, Scorraboi con Noi was planned as a cultural walk with music in the village of Sa Castanza-Berchiddeddu. The 2023 edition was the ninth. The programme also included a visit to the house that houses the rural library of the Associazione S’Abboju.

Music and Sardinian Dance Traditions

The folk group Sa Castanza is associated with the Scottis and the event dedicated to this dance. The Abboju association is also associated with Sa Castanza; it was founded in 2000 and conveys Sardinian folk traditions through dance. At the 26th edition of the Rassegna dello Scottis in Sa Castanza, folk groups and choirs from Gallura and Nuorese came together. The event was organised by the Gruppo Folk Su Rodu.

Landscape and Historical Points of Reference

The summit of Lu Casteddu di Lu Malchesi lies at 349 metres above sea level and offers views over the plain and the Gulf of Olbia. In Berchiddeddu, the necropolis extends along the rocky slopes of Monte Salvannuri.
