Padria combines archaeological evidence, sacred architecture and a distinctive gorge landscape. At the Museo Civico Archeologico, Palattu and Nuraghe Longu, you will encounter different eras and architectural forms; in the surrounding area, the Gola Rio Su Entale complements this cultural focus with deeply carved natural scenery. For planning your trip, this creates a clear combination of a museum, historic sites and a landscape experience, without the individual places losing their own history. For culture-oriented days, the museum, Palattu, Nuraghe Longu and Santa Giulia take centre stage, while the gorge provides an independent landscape highlight.

Archaeology within the Historical Context

The Museo Civico Archeologico in Padria is housed in the former granary next to the church of Santa Giulia. It displays Neolithic finds from the Ozieri culture and presents a votive deposit discovered in San Giuseppe. The deposit dates from between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD and includes anatomical and animal terracottas, fruits and human statuettes.

Palattu reveals several historical layers. In addition to the remains of the Phoenician-Punic fortification of Palattu, the baronial palace of the De Ferrera family was built here in the 16th century. The complex includes a wall approximately 65 metres long, made of large volcanic or basalt blocks. The wall was part of a Phoenician-Punic fortress and was later reused during the Roman and medieval periods.

Nuraghe Longu and Its Architectural Form

Nuraghe Longu is a complex structure with a main tower and two smaller towers. These were later added to the sides and connected by a straight wall. An intact, seven-metre-high tholos dome is preserved in the circular main chamber. From Padria, you can reach Nuraghe Longu by following the road built for the monument for two kilometres along the sports field.

Santa Giulia Between Architecture and Festival

Santa Giulia is considered one of the outstanding examples of Gothic-Aragonese architecture in Sardinia. In Padria, Santa Giulia is celebrated on 22 May. Alongside the archaeological sites, this places a sacred building with its own architectural-historical significance at the centre of attention.

Gorge and Protected Natural Area

In the surrounding area of Padria lies the Gola Rio Su Entale, a gorge more than two kilometres long, carved into volcanic rock, with deep steep walls and waterfalls. These waterfalls include “S’istrampu nieddu” and “Su poggiu ‘e caddu muzzu”. The Gola Rio Su Entale lies within the Natura 2000 site of Community importance “Entroterra e zona costiera tra Bosa, Capo Marargiu e Porto Tangone” (ITB020041). The combination of the gorge, waterfalls and protected-area status gives the landscape a distinct character of its own. Those wishing to consider culture and nature side by side in Padria will find different concrete points of access in the museum, at Palattu, at Nuraghe Longu and in the gorge.
